Welcome to Augustiner Museum

The former convent and monastery church of the Augustinian Hermits could be described as a multifunctional building—over time, it served a variety of purposes. Built in the 13th and 14th centuries, it was initially home to monks from the religious order. After several renovations and extensions, the church became Germany's first municipal theater in 1823. Then, 100 years later, it found its current purpose as a museum. With its extensive art and cultural history collection from the Middle Ages to the Baroque period, the Augustinian Museum is one of the most renowned museums in southern Germany. Anyone entering the spacious nave of the former monastery church will be overwhelmed by the vastness and power of the space. The original prophet figures and gargoyles from Freiburg Minster unfold their mystical effect on the almost twelve-meter-high, whitewashed walls. The impressive sculptures can be viewed from a bird's eye perspective from the gallery; it is a special view of the work of medieval stonemasons. The former convent building is currently being renovated. After completion at the end of 2025, exhibitions on the city's history and folklore will be on display here. The House of Graphic Arts was completed in 2016 as the second phase of construction following the renovation of the monastery church. The new building blends harmoniously into the historic cityscape and connects the various floors and parts of the museum with a central spiral staircase. Display cases embedded in the wall and subtle lighting make the stairwell an extraordinary exhibition space.
