The underground Osnabrück Zoo is home to animals that are normally hidden from humans, including prairie dogs, Norway rats and naked mole rats. A special feature are the tunnels of the shy inhabitants, which are fitted with glass panes. This allows the animals to be observed in their natural habitat. Since 2017, the zoo has also been home to bats in a dimly lit grotto.
