Welcome to Nature Park Schönbuch
The Schönbuch Nature Park is the green lung of the central Neckar region. Located between Tübingen, Reutlingen, Böblingen, and Herrenberg, it is the oldest nature park in Baden-Württemberg. It is a popular recreational destination, and not just for the Stuttgart metropolitan area.
Hiking and biking trails, small forest roads, and fitness trails for athletic visitors, nature trails for those interested in culture, nature, and history, the unique Bebenhausen monastery complex near
Tübingen, and family-friendly playgrounds, barbecue areas, and wildlife enclosures – the 2014 Forest Area of the Year has something for everyone seeking relaxation. The Goldersbach is one of the few remaining unspoiled streams in the greater area and provides a habitat for rare species such as the iridescent kingfisher and the agile dipper. Thanks to the clean water, with a little luck you can even spot crayfish here.
Typical of the Schönbuch's nature is the alternation of naturally managed forests, wet valley meadows, streams, and still waters, as well as extensive agriculture on the edges of the nature park with numerous orchards.
The "pearl" of the Schönbuch Nature Park is undoubtedly Bebenhausen. The charming townscape is dominated by the former Cistercian abbey, founded in 1187. It is one of the best-preserved monastery complexes in southwestern Germany. Masterpieces of Gothic architecture include the summer refectory (1335) and the striking crossing tower of the monastery church (1407–09). The idyllic Tübingen district of Bebenhausen is a listed ensemble.
