Welcome to the Artist village of Worpswede

The pretty artist village of Worpswede offers a unique symbiosis of art, culture and nature. The former village in the moors at the foot of the 54-metre Weyersberg mountain found fame through the Worpswede artist colony that was founded in 1889. The original landscape of the Teufelsmoor and its impressive interplay between colour and light provided inspiration for famous artists such as Heinrich Vogeler and Paula Modersohn-Becker.

All six museums guide you through the art history of the village. Works from the founding generation to the modern day can be admired in various buildings, including the Worpsweder Kunsthalle, the Große Kunstschau Worpswede, the Haus im Schluh and the Barkenhoff. There are also numerous galleries and workshops showcasing works by traditional and more contemporary artists.

The village is largely pedestrianised, and a walk or a bike ride is the perfect way to enjoy the lovely nature and bucolic charm of the sweeping pastures and waters.

Book a guided tour of the artists' village Worpswede online or in person at the Tourist-Info in the city centre.
