Welcome to Friesenheim

If you look up at the highest church steeple of the Ortenau in Friesenheim-Schuttern or look at the plans of the once extensive Baroque monastery complex, you can imagine the importance and beauty of the former benedictine abbey. Presumably the monastery was founded in 603 by an Irish-Scottish monk named Offo.

In the course of its nearly 1,200-year history, the monastic community has not only devoted itself to religious duties but greatly influenced the mental, social and political development of the Ortenau. The increasing secularization of life areas led to decline of the monastery at the beginning of the 19th century.

During excavations in the 1970s, parts of a floor mosaic were laid open depicting the biblical Cain and Abel scenes and they are considered the oldest non-Roman mosaic north of the Alps.

As in the Black Forest in general: Friesenheim and its surroundings is an eldorado for nordic walkers, hikers and cyclists.
