Lake Constance Four-country region

Welcome to Lake Constance Four-country region

A vacation on Lake Constance is pure relaxation: whether culture, sports, wellness, nature, or delicacies from the cellar and kitchen—Lake Constance provides an unclouded vacation feeling all year round. If you need further proof that Baden-Württemberg is on the sunny side, just head out to Lake Constance. Baden-Württemberg is mainly located on the north shore, i.e., the southern slope. The sunny location is a gift. The warmth lingers. Wine and fruit thrive here. And people even more so. If you let your gaze wander across the Swabian Sea from the north shore, you have the entire Alpine panorama in front of you. Against this backdrop, it is understandable that some people jump right in out of sheer joy. In summer, the water temperatures are wonderfully inviting, usually between 19 and 25 degrees Celsius. Swimming, sailing, and surfing are all options. But even on land, the same applies: everything is possible, nothing is mandatory. Everyone can find their own spot to relax on the wide shore. If you like, you can choose a place with friendly service – preferably on the sun terrace. ##### **Jump in. Feel good.** Only geographers talk about Germany's largest inland body of water. For children, it's the biggest bathtub they've ever seen. You hardly need to explain to the little ones how wonderful life by the lake can be. Every town has a beach. At least. Adults can lie in the front row – or stand on a stand-up paddleboard and gently paddle their way to new perspectives. Those who like things a little faster can choose wakeboarding or water skiing. Numerous schools offer courses. You can also learn to dive, motorboat, or sail. There's hardly a more beautiful backdrop than the Alps for getting your sailing license. ##### **The finest cycling pleasure all around** Admittedly, cycling the entire 260 kilometers of the **Lake Constance Cycle Route **in one day is more than a little ambitious. It only becomes a vacation when you take a break. Then there's time for detours. Worthwhile sidekicks from the Lake Constance Cycle Route can be found, for example, at **Salem Castle**, the magnificent and well-preserved 12th-century monastery. Another delicious detour is the so-called hop loop. The journey is the destination? Not at all! It's worth taking the time to visit the hop town of Tettnang. We also recommend Hopfengut No. 20, which combines a museum, brewery, and powerful pleasures under one roof. After that, there's no need to rush. Speaking of shortcuts: leisure cyclists divide the Lake Constance Cycle Route into suitable stages. Lake Constance boat trips offer wonderful opportunities for straight-line shortcuts in many places. ##### **The art of a cultivated stop for refreshments** Crisp apples help crisp calves get going. Many apple farmers have set up stands that you shouldn't rush past. However, fruit is by no means a substitute for a hearty lunch or evening meal. Fresh fish in all kinds of variations is of course on the daily menu. The culinary riches of the entire tri-border region can hardly be summarized on a single page. The drinks menu is also as thick as a book. Wines, liqueurs, and schnapps are particularly worth trying. They allow you to taste the full flavor of Lake Constance sunshine. ##### **Travel smarter** You can take the car. But you can also leave it behind. The traditional way to reach the cultural cities on the lake is by boat. Constance, Überlingen, Meersburg, and Friedrichshafen can be wonderfully explored from the harbor. In the city of the Council, the cathedral is not to be missed. In Friedrichshafen, exciting stories of technology await in the Zeppelin and Dornier museums. Literature lovers will want to include Wasserburg in their itinerary to follow in the footsteps of Martin Walser. If you want to start at the very beginning, you should start at the pile dwellings in Unteruhldingen. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a journey back in time to the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. Welcome to 4300 BC. ##### **Islands of beauty** Speaking of World Heritage Sites, the largest island in Lake Constance also bears this title. The Benedictine monastery on **Reichenau Island** can be reached via the dam built in 1838. You can also walk over to the smaller **Mainau Island** without getting your feet wet. Just follow the scent of flowers. Count Lennart Bernadotte, who died in 2004, called his island a "flower ship." In fact, at 45 hectares, it is only slightly larger than a barge. Nevertheless, a walk through Mainau's sea of flowers is an unforgettable experience. It's no wonder that tropical plants in particular appreciate the mild climate of Lake Constance. In this respect, they agree with the guests. It's better to stay where it's beautiful.
