The spa town of Bad Gandersheim was home to Hrotsvitha, or Roswitha of Gandersheim, the first female German poet and secular canoness of Gandersheim Abbey in the 10th century.

Mit einer Fläche von etwa 25.000 Hektar gehört der Nationalpark Harz zu den größten Naturschutzgebieten Deutschlands.
