Churches and abbeys

The baroque Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, designed by Johann Schmuzer, takes pride of place in the centre of the landgrave town of Pfreimd. Johann Schmuzer built it in 1685.

The Abbey Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, designed by Antonio Viscardi and co-designed by the Asam brothers, with its opulent interior, is an impressive testimony to Baroque architecture.

The Benedictine Abbey of Plankstetten in the Altmühltal nature reserve has existed since 1129. The Ensemble incorporating the monastery church is worth seeing and follows the baroque style.

God's Garden on the Upper Main river is a showcase of picturesque villages, colourful orchards and rugged rock formations. High above Gottesgarten rises the former Benedictine abbey, Kloster Banz.

The Kastulus Minster is Moosburg an der Isar’s prominent landmark. It was built in the 12th century and is home to an array of outstanding artworks. Ancient inscriptions are still visible on the richly ornamented Romanesque portal.

God's Garden on the Upper Main river is an ideal place for exploring the beautiful natural surroundings with its hills, forests and valleys.

The Collegiate Basilica of St. Vitus and St. Deocar in Herrieden is adorned with outstanding architecture and artistic features. It was promoted to a basilica by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010.

Fantastic scenery and many historic gems await you in the small town of Himmelkron. In the former nunnery, you will find one of Germany’s most beautiful medieval cloisters featuring music-making angels.

The historic pilgrimage church of Maria Rain stands in the village of the same name in the district of Oy-Mittelberg. Built in 1496, it is regarded today as the prettiest village church in Allgäu.

At the edge of the Loisach-Kochelsee moor lies the Benediktbeuern monastery, which is considered to be the oldest monastery in Upper Bavaria and was owned by the Benedictines until secularisation.

The monastery in Scheyern is a Benedictine abbey at the ancestral seat of the Wittelsbach family. A guided tour leads visitors through churches and chapels, the cloister and the baroque sacristy.

The Kreuzberg in the Franconian Rhön region is also called the "Holy Mountain of the Franconians". According to legend, the first pilgrimage took place as early as AD 686.

Located on the foothills of the Alps is the imposing 12th-century Irsee Abbey. Its ornate twin towers and high Baroque façade give the abbey an impressive external appearance.

The collection of buildings in the monastery village in Speinshart are culturally and historically important, and have a long rural tradition. By 2017, most of the 18th-century-built houses had been thoroughly renovated.

The Crescentia Convent is located at the heart of the Kaufbeuren old town in southwest Bavaria. According to legend, it was built as a convent in 1250.
