The original castle complex was extended in the 16th century to become an extensive Renaissance chateau. Haigerloch Castle is now a hotel and conference venue.

The Schlegler Castle, dating from the 15th century, is also affectionately called “Box” by the citizens of Heimsheim. Not without good reason, the defiant, unadorned tower looks like this.

Nestled between the rolling hills and green woodlands of the Spessart low mountain range is the 13th-century Ronneburg Castle, one of only a few hilltop castles in Hesse still in its original state.

The magnificent Arolsen Castle is the town’s famous landmark and is known as the Versailles of the Waldeck region. The name is certainly justified as the castle was modelled on French designs.

One of the most beautiful baroque palaces and numerous buildings bespeak even today the time of the Margraves of Baden-Baden. 1848/49 Prussian troups ended the Baden Revolution in Rastatt.

The beautiful moated palace built in the 15th century, Schloss Glatt in Sulz, today serves as a cultural and media centre with four different museums.

Berlepsch Castle, located in the picturesque Werra Valley, has been destroyed and rebuilt numerous times since the 14th century. Today, the castle is still run by descendants of the counts of Berlepsch.

Fasanerie Castle in Eichenzell was originally built as a modest country house but was later converted by the future prince-bishop of Fulda into an impressive summer residence and the finest Baroque castle in Hesse.

Laubach Castle can be easily reached on foot after strolling through the old town. It consists of three, horseshoe-shaped structures that are interlocked with one another.

The striking silhouette of the Münzenberg Castle with its two round keeps can be seen far beyond the boundary of the Wetterau district and has led to the castle being known locally as the Wetterau inkwells.
