Historic old towns

Directly next to the Main-Danube Canal and the Altmühl Valley Nature Park is a true medieval gem: the small historic town of Berching. In the Baroque-style Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary magnificent frescos decorate the ceiling.

Landsberg am Lech is a pretty medieval town located on the Romantic Road. Also popular with cyclists, this tourist route which runs right though Bavaria was the first of its kind in Germany when created more than 70 years ago.

Lichtenfels is known far beyond Franconia as the German wicker basket city. The "Path of Basket-making Culture" adventure trail leads you on a journey through time into the world of basket-making.

Lohr am Main, with its picturesque setting, is also renowned for being the home town of Snow White. More about the town’s connection with the fairy-tale princess can be discovered in the Spessart Museum.

The romantic town of Marktbreit is renowned for its picturesque old town with its Renaissance town hall, striking Baroque houses and the impressive former noble residence – the Seinsheimscher Schloss.

The historic shopping town of Mühldorf am Inn has a history spanning more than 1000 years. Due to its location on the River Inn, it developed into an important trading place during the Middle Ages.

Mellrichstadt in the Rhön Nature Park is one of the oldest cultural sites in Franconia. The town’s core is surrounded by six suburbs. Each one is a pretty Franconian village with special character.

The market town of Heroldsberg is renowned for its four castles and a vibrant cultural history. The names of the four former patrician castles are said to relate to the original colours of the castles’ shutters.

Memmingen has rightly been titled the ‘town of human rights’ as the first declaration of human rights – the Twelve Articles – was set down in writing here in 1525.

In the heart of the tourist region of Churfranken is Miltenberg, one of the prettiest medieval towns in Germany. It’s also referred to as the ‘Franconian pearl on the River Main’.

Münchberg is one of the oldest towns in the Hof area. The Historic Münchberg Way features 44 stations and will lead you past historic buildings and squares.

The historic town of Merkendorf renowned for cabbage farming lies at the gateway to the Franconian Lake District. The ‘cabbage fountain’ in the square in front of the town hall is a reminder of this old tradition.

Since 1917, the town has been named after Wolfram von Eschenbach, the famous minstrel and poet who was born and buried here. The Liebfrauenmünster church is one of the oldest wide-aisle Gothic churches in southern Germany.

The small town of Pfaffenhofen lies in the scenic hop growing region of Hallertau. Its main square with an ensemble of historic townhouses is one of Upper Bavaria’s prettiest.

The Bavarian town of dolls, Neustadt bei Coburg, has a long tradition in the manufacture of dolls and toys. The International Doll Festival is the largest festival of its kind in the world.
