Welcome to Maars
Those who vacation in the GesundLand Vulkaneifel cannot miss them: the famous maars for which the Eifel is known. Once created by the explosive forces of volcanism, they now lie nestled in a unique natural backdrop, colorful, idyllic, and almost mystical.
Incredible forces shaped the landscape and still bestow upon it a rugged, primeval facade in many places. However, the maars now lie peacefully in the Eifel, with no trace of the raw energy that once prevailed here. The maar valleys formed by volcanism filled with volcanic rock. Through flowing groundwater, maar lakes then formed.
Among the most well-known of these maar lakes are the three Daun maars: the Schalkenmehrener Maar, the Weinfelder Maar, and the Gemündener Maar, as well as the Pulvermaar near Gillenfeld. In some officially designated areas, there is lively bathing activity in summer. However, some maar lakes have also silted up again and are still preserved today as dry maars, such as the Strohner Märchen or the Dreiser Weiher near Dreis-Brück. For the inexperienced, the dry maars are often not so easy to recognize at first glance – why not give it a try when you are in the GesundLand Vulkaneifel!
