The Church of the Holy Cross provides the answer to the question of why Zittau is called the "City of Lenten Cloths". The museum inside displays a 15th century Lenten cloth in the largest museum display case in the world. A more recent Lenten cloth from the late 16th century depicting the Passion of Christ can be admired in the Franciscan monastery in Zittau.
