It was mainly thanks to its dense network of waterways that the Spreewald/ Blota region was awarded the title of UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1991. Offering shelter to numerous animal species, otters and sea eagles populate the floodplain landscape, as do endangered amphibians. Three visitor centres reveal more about animal inhabitants, while the Schlossberghof Burg presents the agriculture of the Spreewald.
