Welcome to Stuttgart - Palace Square
The SWR television tower in Stuttgart is the first television tower of its kind made of reinforced concrete and impresses with a height of 217 meters. Test your head for heights! After a construction period of 20 months, the Stuttgart television tower went into operation on February 5, 1956.
With its impressive height of 217 meters, it is the original model for television towers around the world. Originally, the then Süddeutscher Rundfunk (South German Broadcasting Corporation) wanted to place its antennas for broadcasting television and FM radio programs on one of the 200-meter-high iron lattice masts secured with wire ropes that were common at the time.
This monstrous project brought Stuttgart engineer Prof. Fritz Leonhardt, who had made a name for himself as a bridge builder and structural engineer, onto the scene. His idea was to replace the ugly lattice mast with an elegant concrete needle rising out of the Degerloch forest and to equip it with a tower basket with viewing platforms that could be used for tourism and gastronomy...
Today, the SWR TV Tower in Stuttgart is a popular landmark of the city. Enjoy the view (on a clear day, you can see as far as the Swabian Alb!) from the tower platform and the Panorama Café! **CMS object** Type: Image gallery
