St. Michaelis und Dom | UNESCO-Welterbe in Hildesheim

Welcome to St. Michaelis und Dom | UNESCO-Welterbe in Hildesheim

A short walk along Burgstraße - and already the next highlight: St. Michael's Church, which celebrates 1,000 years of consecration on 29 September 2022. Together with St. Mary's Cathedral, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. Its slightly elevated position, thick towers and walls give the former Benedictine monastery something of a fortress - powerful on the outside, harmonious on the inside. The three-nave basilica is one of the most important preserved churches in the Ottonian, i.e. pre- or early Romanesque architectural style. You will feel the special atmosphere of this sacred gem. Don't forget to look up in the church - a major focus is on the monumental 13th-century ceiling painting in the nave  of the church: the family tree of Christ is depicted on 1,300 oak boards.
