Schloß Friedenstein Gotha Barockes Ekhof-Theater

The Ekhof Theatre at Friedenstein Castle in Gotha is considered one of the oldest baroque theatres in the world with still functioning stage machinery. Built in the 17th century, it was equipped with stage technology that was revolutionary at the time. Cable winches were used to move the backdrops, while thunder and wind machines created atmosphere. The machines are shown on guided tours, but are also used at the annual Ekhof Festival.
