Brown signs in Europe
Historic old towns
Marktplatz 1, 71706 Markgröningen
The highlight of cultural life in Markgröningen is the annual Schäferlauf, one of the oldest festivals in southern Germany and since 2019 included in the list of intangible cultural heritage. The centerpiece of the multi-day festival is the barefoot race of shepherdess and shepherds over a 300-foot stubble field. The winner will be given the honor of being a shepherdess queen or shepherd king for a year. Other festivities include historical parades and the large chandler -, shepherd - and craft market.
Markgröningen is located about 20 kilometers northwest of Stuttgart. Thanks to its magnificent half-timbered architecture, it is considered as a jewel on the section "From the Neckar to the Black Forest and Lake Constance" of the German Fachwerkstraße. A sign-posted old town tour will take you past more than 30 half-timbered buildings and will give you information about the history of half-timbered buildings from the middle ages to the Renaissance and the Baroque. Numerous inns await you afterwards for a refreshing rest!
