Centuries of lignite mining contributed significantly to the creation of the Leipzig New Lakeland. Today's landscape is characterised by renaturalised lakes that were once deep excavation pits. Waters such as Lake Kulkwitz offer bathing beaches and water sports facilities, while rare bird species can be observed around Lake Bockwitz.
