Harz | UNESCO Global Geopark
The largest UNESCO Global Geopark in Germany is the Geopark Harz-Braunschweiger-Land-Ostfalen. It stretches over 9,600 square kilometres from Thuringia to Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. With its rich mineral resources such as silver-bearing ores, coal and crude oil, it has a history of mining and exploration stretching back over 1,000 years. The World Heritage Site of Goslar and historic Quedlinburg offer cultural variety.
