Castles and palaces
Schlossraum 4, 76646 Bruchsal
In the Rhine valley at the foot of the Kraichgau lies the asparagus metropolis Bruchsal - a modern city with a millennia-old history. A special ornament is the magnificent baroque castle Bruchsal, which is the only religious residence on the Upper Rhine.
In the 18th century, the Prince-Bishops of Speyer assigned important artists with the construction and furnishing of the castle. Especially famous is the staircase designed by Balthasar Neumann, which is also known as the "Crown of all Stairwells".
During the Second World War the entire ensemble was destroyed almost completely. Its reconstruction counts to the architectural brilliant achievements in Baden-Wurttemberg. The rebuilding was concluded with the reopening of 17 prince-episcopal apartments in the Beletage in spring, 2017. The life at the court of the Speyer prince bishops in the 18th century and the Margravine Amalie of Baden in the 19th century can be retraced especially in the premises of the Beletage.
Besides, the castle also houses the German music machine museum and the urban museum of Bruchsal.
